Modoc County Office of Education has opened this opportunity working with the College of the Siskiyous to host a Distance Learning Center for videoconferencing classes. Spring 2012 classes are available for Modoc County high school students seeking concurrent enrollment and adults seeking a higher education. The course includes sections on languages, archeology, ancient history and modern cultures, with an emphasis on living traditional cultures. (AA, CSU, UC). BA 0959 (BA 59) 3 units: Business and Practical Math This course uses the business environment and life examples to learn mathematical principles. Topics include: statistics and probability, annuities and retirements, taxes, home and car loans, optimum solutions, proportions, and financial statements. (AA). BA 1006 (BA 6) 3 units: Introduction to Business During this course, students are introduced to the world of business through discussions of marketing, management, entrepreneurship, finance, human resources, business ethics and the global marketplace. Various types of business entities will be examined and analyzed in the context of today’s dynamic business environment. (AA, CSU, UC). Advisory: ENGL 0950 BA 1018 (BA 18) 3 units: The Legal Environment of Business The Legal Environment of Business is an introduction to the legal process and the impact of the law on societal, governmental and economic entities. (UC) COMS 1100 (SPCH 1) 3 units: Public Speaking This course includes basic principles and practices of public speaking, developing proficiency and self-confidence in speaking with special attention to organization, development and communication of ideas, thought conveyance, structure, style and delivery. Advisory: ECE 1 ECE 2502 (ECE 24) 3 units: Early Childhood Education Practicum This course offers an opportunity to demonstrate developmentally appropriate early childhood teaching competencies under guided supervision. Students will utilize practical classroom experiences to make connections between theory and practice, develop professional behaviors, and build a comprehensive understanding of children and families. Child centered, play-oriented approaches to teaching, learning, and assessment; and knowledge of curriculum content areas will be emphasized as student teachers design, implement and evaluate experiences that promote positive development and learning for all young children. EDUC 0960 (EDUC 60) 0.5 units: Reading Principles This course offers classroom tutors an opportunity to learn reading program components and strategies for use with elementary school age children. (NDA) ETHN 1001 (ETHN 1) 3 units: Ethnic Studies This interdisciplinary course will introduce the student to the diverse institutional, cultural, and historical issues relating to the past and present life circumstances of Afro-Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans, and Hispanic Americans. (AA, CSU, UC) NURS 1045 (NURS 45) 3 units: Medical Terminology This course introduces the student to the fundamentals of medical word building as well as terms related to specific body systems. Emphasis is placed upon pronunciation, spelling, anatomical, pathological, surgical, and diagnostic terminology. This course is designed for pre-nursing students, health care clerical support staff, nursing assistants, and others desiring a basic knowledge of medical terminology and how the body works.
