Data for last year show that 36 percent of employees in the district used up their annual allocation of regular sick days, and 18 percent exhausted their extended sick leave.

Hanline said absenteeism is accompanied by an inefficient system of arranging substitutes. He said the staff responsible for calling substitutes doesn't come in until 7:30 a.m. – after school starts.
