Melissa Ortega earns state award despite 2008 family tragedy

Recent Covina High School graduate Melissa Ortega has overcome a tragedy many can’t even conceive. So it came as no surprise to Claudia Karnoski, principal of Covina High School, when Ortega won the Every Student Succeeding award.

She accepted the award Nov. 8 at the San Jose Convention Center, from the Association of California School Administration (ACSA), with her aunt smiling proudly in the audience.
