State transgender law stirs schools debate

Yuba-Sutter residents are collecting signatures for a referendum to have a public vote on a law recently signed by Gov. Jerry Brown regarding schools' equal treatment of students who are transgender. The state law that goes into effect Jan. 1 directs public schools to permit students to participate in programs and use facilities consistent with his or her gender identity, regardless of the gender listed on the pupil's records.
